The Raleigh (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated donated $1,200 to the Helping Hand Mission on December 19, 2020. Several members of the chapter gathered at the Mission, located on Rock Quarry Road near downtown Raleigh, to present the check. The funds will be used to help restock the Mission’s food pantry.
A recent news report that featured Ms. Sylvia Wiggins, Executive Director, emphasized the increasing need for food, clothing, and household items since the pandemic began. She noted that the demand for food had almost emptied the pantry’s shelves. In response to her plea for donations, the Raleigh (NC) Chapter answered the call and provided $1,200 to purchase food items. Ms. Wiggins stated “The donation will grow to maybe as much as $2,000 with discounts when she tells stores that it was a donation from The Links.”
The Helping Hand Mission has served the Raleigh community since 1972 and has been run by Ms. Wiggins for more than 40 years. In addition to helping feed the community, some of Mission’s programs include donation pick up service, operation fan relief, daily food boxes for low-income individuals, youth enrichment programs, and warm clothing for the homeless. Ms. Wiggins was honored by the Raleigh (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated in 2018 at its annual fundraiser, the Emerald Award, for her outstanding work in the community.
During the presentation of the check Brenda Lewis, Chapter President, stated “On behalf of the Raleigh (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, we present this $1,200 to assist with the outstanding work that you are doing to serve those in need. We hope this will help fill your pantry shelves.”
